A familiar fin was spotted off the north coast of Mull today by local fisherman Kenny Turnbull.

Two killer whales, one identified as John Coe, and the other as a yet unidentified male, were spotted today at midday. You can watch Kenny's amazing video on our Facebook page. They were spotted again in the distance at 4pm off Caliach Point, north Mull by Ewan Miles of Nature Scotland and were last seen at 5.30pm heading out towards the Treshnish Isles and Tiree.

It is fantastic to see John Coe around the coast of Mull, especially at this time of year when fewer species are around in large numbers. A huge thank you to Kenny Turnbull for the sighting information. We say it often, but there would be very little known about this unique group of killer whales if it weren’t for local people sharing their sightings with us.

Coincidentally,  the West Coast Community were spotted in the same place off the north coast of Mull at a similar time last year (on the 1st March 2017). You can read more about the West Coast Community and HWDT's research on this unique group here.
