whale & dolphin day

Join us in Tobermory on Saturday 2nd August 2025 for Whale and Dolphin Day. We invite you to find out more about our work through an exciting programme of activities. We’ve also teamed up with Mull Film Club to present three fin-tastic films followed by Q&As with conservation experts.

Programme:

Hebridean Whale Centre exhibitions and playroom will be open 10am till 5pm.

10 am: Mull Film Club present Song of the Sea (PG). Ben, a young Irish boy, and his little sister Saoirse, a girl who can turn into a seal, go on an adventure to free the fairies and save the spirit world, in this animated family adventure film. Aros Hall.

10 am - 12 noon: Open Boat. Tour HWDT’s research vessel Silurian, meet the crew and learn about our research. Silurian will be alongside the Tobermory Pontoons. Drop in. Donations welcomed.

11 am - 2pm: Guided watch at Tobermory Lighthouse. HWDT guides will be set up at Rubha nan Gall with scopes and binos on the lookout for wildlife. We will share top-tips for spotting and identifying. Bring a packed lunch and, if we are lucky, picnic with a porpoise! Drop in.

11:30 am - 12:30 pm: Family games and crafts at the Hebridean Whale Centre. Join us for family fun as we get crafty, crack out the games and generally have a whale of a time! We have a range of crafts and games suitable for all ages. Drop in. Donations welcomed.

1.30 pm - 3.30 pm - Open Boat at the Tobermory Pontoons.

1:30 pm - 3.30 pm: Family crafts and games at the Hebridean Whale Centre.

4 pm - 5:45 pm: Mull Film Club present Patrick and the Whale followed by a Q&A on the ethics of filming wildlife with Dr Conor Ryan. An inspiring and engaging tale of Patrick Dykstra and a sperm whale "Dolores." Using stunning underwater footage, Patrick explores the fascinating nature of the whale. He attempts to shine a light on its intelligence and complexity, as well as highlight its current and past relationship with humankind. Aros Hall. Refreshments available.

6:30 pm - 9 pm: Mull Film Club present Ocean with David Attenborough (PG) followed by a Q&A on marine conservation with a panel of HWDT experts. David Attenborough explores the planet's undersea habitats, revealing the greatest age of ocean discovery and emphasising the ocean's vital importance while exposing its problems and highlighting opportunities for marine life recovery. Aros Hall. Refreshments available.
